Essaouira is known as the windy city of Morocco. A combination of spectacular beaches, wide seas and near-constant tropical winds has transformed this city from a hardworking port into one of the world's largest sites for windsurfing, kiteboarding and other exciting water sports. The city has a double heritage and this can be seen in the powerful walls surrounding this old Moroccan shopping center. Once a Portuguese fortress, the rusted cannons between the ramts still point to the sea, and there is a certain European feeling for the construction of the city once known as Mogador. However, the narrow winding streets are filled with the sound of Gnaoua singing, the women in white haiks weave their way through the alleys of the old medina and the palm trees cast their shadows on the walls of the white houses. At its heart Essaouira is, and has always been, a Moroccan city.
